I’ll Stay Poor Thanks
One of the hit songs from the 1956 movie “High Society” asked the question “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”. The “I don’t” answer would produce significant resonance even today, but before canvassing a cross section of your family, friends and workmates you’ll need to get a definition that fits your conception of what you think of as wealthy. I think that it covers a huge range.
In my first job I was paid 6 shillings A DAY!!! – for those of you who weren’t around when Australia switched to decimal currency in 1966 – that’s the equivalent of 60cents! I doubt that you could convince any 14 year old today to even get out of bed for a similar amount.
When £500,000 turned overnight into $1,000,000 in 1966 do you think that produced instant conversion? If you have $1,000,000 and it’s just sitting in your bank account, you might be lucky to earn $400 per week in interest.
