The description above is rarely heard these days but the “things” that are “made round” and referred to in the expression “made round to go round” are coins. Their use as defined in the quoted saying is An excellent description of what governments are seeking to achieve during our current battle with Covid-19.
If all of us restrict ourselves to the necessities of life (which are of course subject to huge personal variation) then civilisation as we know it, admittedly in various shapes and sixes throughout the world, would grind to a very dull halt almost instantaneously.
The spending of money generates wealth, not all of which falls into or stays in the hands of the wealthy in our communities. While central banks are creating money out of thin air we can at least remain calm with the thought that spending money (and that’s what it’s for) does indeed make the world go around!
