Are you an investor?

I seem to keep on going round in circles and if that really is the case I apologize to all those people who stop in the middle and say “I’ve read that before”. If you’re a gambler or a speculator, please stop reading because I am neither. If you have young children buy them a money box, and when it is filled with 5 cent coins (well earned), their eyes will glow when the money box is emptied and their savings BANKED. All other coins are in a big money box. I never leave home with coins worth less than a dollar in my pocket. Do the same for your kids and encourage them to do the same for yourself. When the money box is full for goodness sake do not splurge.

Arithmetic

I’m not sure that all those school students over the last umpteen years really absorbed the concept that a formula like 15-5+6=16 produces a better situation than 15-0+0=15. Pensioners are allowed to work and earn some money. If they earn over a certain amount, their pension is reduced. Shame! If $2 extra income in your hand reduces your pension by $1 how much better off are you? Unfortunately my example above does not simply refer to kids – there are as many able bodied pensioners in our society who believe that their pension is sacred and that ANY system which reduces that pension is automatically bad, even if they are better off. What a pity!

Double Tax

Last week I referred to tax in general terms. Can I now get specific about the abomination of double tax. When I receive a payment fro the company that I own a really tiny bit of – BHP – I HAVE PAID MY TAX on the profit made by my company for me (and a few million other shareholders as well). Some years back a fair-minded government recognized that taxing the same income twice was decidedly unreasonable. It has never ceased to be unreasonable, but one of the political parties seeking to take over the financial management of our country has announced a policy to reverse the process and subject a VERY large number of Australians to paying tax twice on the same earnings. Go figure! Go vote!

Tax

Lots of people get funny about tax. There used to be a service station in Brisbane which advertised the price of petrol at a significant discount to their opposition but PLUS government tax, which brought the price back to that of the field. What message do you think he was trying to convey? Whenever I get an invoice with added GST at 10% I am very pleased that the service is being taxed in Australia and not in those European countries where the add-on is 18%. I don’t think you’ll get many defenders of Al Capone, either the “businessman” or crime boss. But it is interesting to note that he was jailed for tax offences rather than the many more heinous crimes he committed or organized.
